Starched Hearts

I wanted to make some burlap heart ornaments for Valentines Day, but didn't want them to unravel when handled (I'm putting these in my store). I also wanted them to be simple and easy.
 

I just made paper templates of the size heart I wanted, these are 5 1/2" high and about the same at the widest. The top heart is actually cut from a remnant of 2 1/2" wide lace edging. Under that is a layer of iridescent sheer fabric. 
 

The following tutorial (my first) is how I went about it.

Line a cookie sheet with plastic wrap, this really helps with removal and best done before you have starchy hands. I poured a very small amount of liquid starch into a pie dish, just use something that is big enough to hold the heart. Dipped both sides, used my fingers to squeegee the excess off. Laid them each one by itself on the prepared cookie sheet and then dabbed more excess starch off with paper towels. I let these dry overnight.

I used Liquid Stitch to adhere the layers together. Then used a piece of unraveled burlap string threaded through a tapestry needle to secure the button. I sewed front to back then to front, tied a knot at the button and held both pieces together and tied another knot at the top end.

I am going to make more using eyelet, lace and muslin with the burlap.  And the very cute bird fabric (that I've been hoarding forever) is going to be the top layer of burlap and ticking hearts. These can be made bigger, smaller, more embellished. Whatever YOUR HEART desires!!!

There are other products out there that could be used - this is what I had on hand when inspiration struck at 10:30 PM.

It's Been One Year

Well, it's been one year since I "Hung the Sign" did this post (my most viewed post to-date) and opened my brick and mortar shop, Paris Flea Market at 769 Virginia Avenue in North Bend, Oregon

It's been a very busy year for me.  The shop takes a lot of my time and energy, and what's left I devote to my grand children.

I take photos to do a post...but seem to never get further than that. With that said please excuse some of these photos...I have a difficult time getting a sharp and clear image (took over 200 digitals for this post alone) , hence, one of the problems of frequent posting.

And now for the photo tour......

Got two new signs for outside...this very cool VINTAGE CHIC sign and another that hangs from the awning (no pics). Already had the one to the left.

I absolutely adore this white nativity set!

I use newer NOT VINTAGE patterns for my tissue paper to wrap items in, the response is fantastic...every one notices, they even call out to others there with to come over and see.  I use to use black and cream toile tissue paper that cost a small fortune...and no one ever noticed. I very much like "keeping it simple".

I have a map of France on a cork board and have all my customers that have been to France put a pin in there favorite place.  Surprising how many people have just been to Paris.  A few people spied England and Italy and pinned locals there!!!

I had the Nutcracker with snow flakes painted on my window for the holiday season. I've always enjoyed store windows that were painted for the holidays....

Estate Sale Loot

I've been to four Estate Sales lately.  Mostly they were just A LOT of  NOTHING.  Three of them were hoarders and it wasn't pretty!!! I did luck out and found a couple of furniture pieces. It's been really difficult to find furniture items in the area.

This chair was one of the finds.  I really like the legs and arms are always a nice feature.  The piece of upholstery fabric came from a great estate sale in Coquille.That's what I'll be using to recover the seat.  I'm painting the chair light blue/grey color.

I also got a bunch of wooden coat hangers...this one is from a cleaners here in Coos Bay, it closed in the late 60's.  Marshfield was the name of our town until the mid 30's. I collect old wood advertising hangers.

 

Found this frame at another estate sale, also got a couple of books and a few ornaments for a Christmas project.  My daughter picked up a four post faux wood grain metal bed...it's really awesome no pic it's already at her house.

This is just a hodge podge of all four sales~~~I finally got a decent enough day to pull the stuff out of the garage a take some pictures.

I got 5 old wooden screens. I'm going to do a stencil project with them.

A couple of galvanized buckets, some old insulators, and several boxes of glass jars (didn't take them all out). that brown leather and silver studded piece is an old dog collar.

Got this old wooden ironing board and the drawer in front to do stencil projects on also.

A rusty chicken feeder and a galvanized mop bucket that someone has painted yellow, it has a cool old handle that still show some of it's red paint.

There were some smalls that I've already taken to the shop...and most have already sold.

And lastly here is a round wooden card table with a 1923 Hoboken, New Jersey patent date.I picked this piece up in  Myrtle Point, at Tickled Pink, a small antiques shop. The gal there does her furniture up in mostly white with pink roses, all but a few pieces were tagged "sold". She does a fantastic job. This little table was a piece one of her vendors had.

 
Usually I see square folding table so I'm really liking this round one with the very cool turned legs!!!  This is going in the shop.  I'll be recovering four metal chairs to display with it in my window. Pics and a Post to follow.
